Bell Cab does not employ taxi drivers. Bell Cab taxi drivers are self-employed independent contractors. If you want to become an independent contractor taxicab driver, you must
meet the following requirements of Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and Bell Cab's insurance carrier:
- Be eligible to work in the United States
- Minimum Age: 23
- Have valid California Class A, B, or C driver’s license for at least one year
- Provide DMV K4 printout, less than thirty (30) days old
- No felony convictions
- No Hit and Run resulting in injury or death
- No Hit and Run resulting in property damage within the last (3) years
- No reckless driving or DUI causing injury
- No reckless driving or DUI within the last (5) years
- No more than (3) moving violations within the past (3) years with a maximum of (2) violations within the last year or no more than (2) chargeable vehicle accidents within the last (3) years
- Must enroll and pass a drug/ alcohol test and participate in random drug test program
- Submit to medical exam if required by insurance carrier
- Be screened and accepted by the insurance carrier
- Have no physical or mental conditions that would prevent the driver from boarding, alighting, securing, and transporting passengers safely
- Obtain taxi driver permit for City of Los Angeles
- Attend the orientation and the training programs conducted by LADOT

LADOT Permit Application Process
Bell Cab will submit an application for you to LADOT online. LADOT requires that you have the following original documents, (no photocopies allowed) for this online application process
to be completed:
- Valid California Drivers License, Class C or higher
- Drug test program certificate and drug test results
- Proof of Federal right to work documents that meet the Federal I-9 requirements. Examples of documents include but are not limited to:
- Passport
- United States Birth Certificate
- Alien Registration card (Green card)
- Social Security card along with a valid State issued ID
- Payment of non-refundable processing fee of $112.00 (current fee but subject to change)
- Completed California Dept of Justice Livescan form for mandatory California DOJ and FBI background check
LADOT Permit Processing
LADOT will review and approve your driver application and issue a driver permit. A Bell Cab representative will pick up your permit when it is available. Once you receive your permit,
you are authorized to drive as long as you meet all other requirements.
LADOT Driver Customer Service and Safety Seminar
At the time of your initial processing by LADOT you may be scheduled for the LADOT Driver Customer Service and Safety seminar. You must bring the following to the seminar:
- Valid California Driver’s License or other acceptable identification
- Pen or pencil
You may continue to work before your scheduled seminar date.
